Goals.

  • Create a puzzle brand that feels elevated and different
  • Design packaging that becomes part of the puzzle making process
  • Explore form and discover how it can enhance a puzzle experience

Challenges.

The most difficult challenge for me during this project was designing the wooden box. I wanted to create a box that could be displayed sitting on a shelf or coffee table, but also served a function. This is why I included dividers inside the box, so sorted puzzle pieces could stay together if the puzzle was unable to be finished in one sitting. I also include a lip on the lid of the box so part of the puzzle could be built on the go if desired. The package of mini puzzles posed another challenge. I wanted to create packaging that was like a puzzle itself, but had to connect them to be sold.

Narrative.

I began by researching puzzle brands and exploring ways packaging could become part of the puzzle experience rather than simply containing the product. From there, I sketched my ideas for interactive packaging structures and puzzle formats.
I created a process brief, and experimented with colors and type to create the branding. I then sketched, and printed pre-existing dilines to explore different packaging forms. After I settled on the type I would like, I developed the wooden box in the wood shop, cutting, staining, and assembling the box. Then
I created the labels, and designed the mini puzzle boxes on adobe Illustrator. After several rounds of critique, I completed the project.

Result.

The final Puzzle Key set creates a puzzle experience that extends beyond the pieces themselves. The wooden box provides both storage and organization, while also functioning as a display object. The four circular mini puzzles offer flexibility in how they are assembled and encourage experimentation through their modular design. By integrating packaging, storage, and play, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate a familiar activity into a more engaging and interactive experience.
